First settled in 1862, Mackay is known to be an incredibly vivacious city with a tropical climate, making it a lovely place to travel to or in live in. As a fun fact, Mackay is also known as the sugar capital of Australia, producing more than a third of the cane sugar in Australia. In the older city centre of Mackay lies the City Heart, which is thriving with many of the region’s professional firms, but also has undergone quite a transformation in recent years.
The City Heart has been changed completely by a community arts project, and contains over 580 pieces of art, most of it reflecting the beauty and majesty of nature in the region.
The art pieces include inspiration from the Great Barrier Reef, as well as from the rainforests of Pioneer Valley. If you want to understand more about the history of the area, go on the Heritage Walk! On this walk, hints of the past will be revealed, and you can revel in all of the historic buildings, including the ones you’ll find on Wood Street.
As you enjoy more of Mackay either through walking along the Bluewater Trail and enjoying the beauty of nature at the Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens, or strolling through the city centre which has some of the best boutiques and cafes in Mackay, remember to relax and enjoy the tropical life! Mackay has 31 beaches within driving distance, and is brimming over with possibilities of having a good time. So come by to Mackay, and don’t forget to visit one of the best restaurants in the area, Coco Cubano!
