About Uyghur
At the foot of snow-covered Tangritah Mountain in the Xin Jiang Autonomous Region in Northwest China live the Uyghur ethnic minority people, know for their singing and dancing, as they havefor generations, Uyghur is often pronounced by English speakers, though the most acceptable English pronunciation is ooy-goor.Uyghur means “union” in the Uyghur language, and the Uyghur community is mainly distributed in the scattering oases along Tangritah Mountain including Kashgar, Hottan, Aksu and Koria as well as Urumqi and Hulja. The Uyghurs are mainly engaged in agriculture: planning cotton, wheat, corn and rice; as well they are skilled in gardening art.
The Uyghur minority speaks the Uyghur language in the Xin Jiang Province, which belongs to Turkic branch of the Altay family. The Uyghur ethnic people are members of the Sunnis branch of Islam. Uyghur food (Uyghur Yemekliri) is characterized by mutton, beef, camel, chicken, goose, carrots, tomatoes, onions, peppers, eggplant, celery, carious dairy foods and fruits..
Uyghur – style breakfast is tea with home – baked bread, called naan in Uyghur language, (a round biscuit made by corn and wheat), and almonds. Uyghurs like to treat guests with tea, naan and fruit before the main dishes are ready, Popular drinks for the Uyghurs are black tea and milk tea. The Xin Jiang region is abundant in sheep, so the people create special sheep meats which are very tender and spicy in local flavour. The typical local dishes are roasted whole lamb.
