Navigating the OSSD Requirements at USCA Academy International School--Private School
At USCA Academy International School--Private School, located at 2187 Dunwin Dr, Mississauga, ON L5L 1X2, Canada, we pride ourselves on providing an exceptional education that prepares students for success in a rapidly changing world. A key part of our educational offerings is the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary for both post-secondary education and the workforce. Here, we break down the requirements for earning an OSSD at our school, ensuring clarity and preparedness for prospective students and their families.
Core Academic Courses
To meet the OSSD requirements, students at USCA Academy must complete a minimum of 30 credits, of which 18 are compulsory. These compulsory credits include:
- English: 4 credits (one per grade level)
- Mathematics: 3 credits (at least one in Grade 11 or 12)
- Sciences: 2 credits
- Canadian History and Canadian Geography: 1 credit each
- Arts: 1 credit
- Health and Physical Education: 1 credit
- French as a Second Language: 1 credit
- Civics and Career Studies: 0.5 credit each
Additionally, students are required to select 12 elective credits from available courses, tailored to their interests and post-secondary goals.
Literacy Requirements
All students must pass the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT), administered in Grade 10. The OSSLT assesses reading and writing skills against standards applicable across all subjects up to the end of Grade 9. For students who do not pass the OSSLT on their first attempt, USCA Academy offers remedial assistance to help them meet the standard in subsequent attempts.
Community Involvement
A distinctive aspect of the OSSD requirements is the community involvement component. Students are required to complete at least 40 hours of community involvement activities during their high school years. These activities encourage students to develop awareness and understanding of civic responsibility while contributing positively to their communities.
Continuous Assessment and Guidance
At USCA Academy, we understand the importance of guidance throughout the OSSD process. Our dedicated staff provides continuous academic counseling to ensure that all students are on track to meet their diploma requirements and personal educational goals. We offer regular assessments and feedback, helping students adjust their learning strategies and course selections as needed.
