Have you heard of cupping massage or cupping therapy? This process uses warm glass cups that are placed on the skin.

Cupping therapy is one treatment under traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). It aims to stimulate the flow of qi (chi).  When qi is released, the vital energy follows as it circulates throughout the body. This then removes the stagnation or blockages and imbalances inside the body.

The process involves warming the air within the cup first. When the cup is placed on the skin, it creates a vacuum. The tissue is drawn inside the cup. It ends by lifting the cups that allow air to break the seal and the vacuum. This is how the blood flow is increased by loosening the connective tissues. It works to increase blood flow and stimulate healing.

This is also like a deep tissue massage. It breaks car tissue. It relaxes the body as it also removes the tension and reduces muscle pain. That is why, cupping therapy is usually done on the neck, shoulders, and back.

Although this form of treatment can temporarily cause redness or soreness, almost like a bruise. That depends on the degree of cupping and how big the blockages are. Though it may not look good, that is a sign that the therapy has removed the stagnation and the toxins inside the body.
