Balconies and bathrooms are the major wet area in the house and it is important that the wet areas
are correctly waterproofed in order to reduce the risk of structural damage occurring as a result of dampness, water leaks.
It is a good idea to go beyond these minimum requirements and ensure that all of
the wet areas are waterproofed as well as the entire bathroom floor, shower walls,
balconies and act….
Waterproofing must be done by licensed waterproofing applicators so you should
check with your local council before any waterproofing work is undertaken.
Building elements in wet areas must be waterproof or water resistant in
accordance with the National Construction Code (NCC) and must comply with
Australian Standard AS3740 –
CAUSE OF WATERPROOFING FAILURE
After poor surface preparation, is the failure to prime the respective parts and surfaces
before the application of the waterproofing membrane Failure of the waterproofing
membrane bond to substrates is a recurring and consistent problem often associated
with poor subsurface drainage and saturation of tiling or topping screeds.
Surface priming for CFC, concrete, mortar screeds and plywood substrates should
always be carried out with the manufacturer’s specified primers. Surface priming will
reduce porosity, dusting, air entrapment (pin holing) and high residual moisture in the
substrate which will cause blistering of the membrane after curing.
