Nmap short for “Network Mapper” is a free and open source tool for vulnerability scanning, network discovery and security auditing. Most of the system and network administrators use this Nmap tool for different tasks such as network inventory, managing service, upgrade schedules, and monitoring host or service uptime. Nmap is one of the most commonly used tools by ethical hackers. Nmap uses raw IP packets in novel ways to determine what hosts are available on the network, what services (application name and version) those hosts are offering, what operating systems and OS versionsthey are running, what type of packet filters and firewalls are in use, and dozens of other characteristics. It was designed to rapidly scan large networks, but works fine against single hosts. Nmap can be used to monitor single hosts as well as vast networks that encompass hundreds of thousands of devices and multitudes of subnets. Nmap runs on all major computer operating systems, and official binary packages are available for Linux, Microsoft Windows, Solaris, BSD and Mac OS X. It is most popular on Linux, followed by Microsoft Windows. A variety of scans can be performed using this security tool like TCP scan, UDP scan, SYN scan, ACK scan, NULL scan and more.
