Float & Restore
Float & Restore floatation therapy, also known as REST (restricted environmental stimulation therapy), is a type of therapy where an individual floats in salt water (magnesium sulphate) which is heated to body temperature. The combination of the high density of the Epsom salts and the skin's natural impermeability from being submerged in water allows one to float effortlessly without any effort or skill required. When lying down on one's back, with facial mask and earplugs, there are almost no external stimuli except for a small amount of light that filters through the translucent tank walls.
A person undergoing this treatment lies inside a tank filled with epsom salt-saturated water in a supine position. The water is heated to skin temperature, so one floats effortlessly without having to do anything. In this way it is very different from exercising or swimming, which involve effort and skill. Earplugs and a blindfold are also often used to block light and noise.
This treatment allows for a period of introspection in a peaceful environment free from distractions such as temperature extremes or outside noises that may cause stress . It is an effective way for dealing with chronic pain, compulsive disorders, anxiety problems, substance abuse problems and many other mental/emotional conditions.
