The literal meaning of ihram is “prohibiting.” Ahram is a sacred state which a Muslim enters in to perform hajj or ‘umrah. Pilgrims must enter into state of Ahram before crossing the Miqat. Hajj and ‘umrah rites begin by entering into the state of Ahram. It is recommended that one should perform the cleansing rituals before wearing the prescribed Ahram clothing.
